Va Va Voom. I don’t know what it means, where it came from or why I wrote it into the dialogue of the first commercial Jamie Colonna and I made for the Renault Clio. But it stuck.

Soon kids were saying it in playgrounds, the client was saying it in meetings and we had one of those things on our hands.

In a couple of years, Va Va Voom made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. And it’s still the brand idea for the Renault Clio in the UK today.

Whatever it means.

The first commercial was shot at Mies Van Der Rohe’s beautiful pavilion in Barcelona, and in the incoming tide at Lindisfarne.

Writer, Paul Quarry. Art director Jamie Colonna. Director Malcolm Venville. Film art director, Johnny Green.
